Getting Here

Colombo to Sigiriya, and Every Other Way Here

Sigiriya sits in the middle of the island, which is the good news and the bad news. Nothing is close, but almost everything is reachable in an afternoon. This page is the distances, the driving times and the last turning, which the mapping apps get wrong.

Colombo to Sigiriya is about 175 km and 4 to 5 hours by car. Kandy is about 90 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. We are at Indigas wewa, 12 minutes by road from Sigiriya Rock and 20 from the Minneriya park gate.

Distances

How Far Sigiriya Is From Everywhere Else

Road distance, not the straight line, and driving times for a car rather than a bus. Sri Lankan roads are slower than the map suggests: 100 km is rarely an hour.

Everything in this table lands at Indigas wewa, which is a few minutes past the Sigiriya junction rather than in the village itself.

The Long Leg

Colombo to Sigiriya, and the Airport Run

Almost everyone does this one on their first or last day, and almost everyone underestimates it. The route runs north east out of Colombo through Kurunegala and Dambulla, with an expressway section for part of the way and main road for the rest. Four hours is a good run. Five is normal. Leaving the city between 7 and 9 in the morning can add an hour on its own.

Straight From the Airport

The airport at Katunayake is north of Colombo, so you are already pointed the right way and you skip the city entirely. Land in the morning and you can be here the same afternoon. After a night landing, sleep near the airport and come up fresh the next morning.

If you would rather not drive it yourself, we can arrange a driver we know to meet you at arrivals.

From the Hills

Kandy to Sigiriya, the Hill Country Leg

90 km and 2.5 to 3 hours, which sounds wrong until you have driven it. The road climbs out of Kandy, winds through Matale and the spice gardens, then drops onto the dry zone plain at Dambulla and straightens out. The winding part is the slow part.

Most people break it at Dambulla for the cave temple, which is 25 minutes short of us and worth the stop. If you do that, you will arrive here in the late afternoon, which is the best time to see the garden anyway.

Coming the other way, Sigiriya to Kandy is the same 2.5 to 3 hours. Plenty of guests do the rock in the morning, have breakfast here and go on to Kandy after checkout.

The Last Mile

Finding Us at Indigas Wewa

We are not on the main strip in Sigiriya village, which is the point. Indigas wewa is a few minutes off it, past the turning most people take, on a quieter road with trees on both sides.

Two things worth knowing. Phone signal is fine but the last stretch confuses some mapping apps, so send us a message when you turn off the main road and we will talk you in. And there is parking on site, free, right by the cottages.

The map loads only when you ask for it, so the page stays quick on a hotel connection.

Route Questions

Questions About Getting Here

How Far Is Colombo From Sigiriya?

About 175 km by road. By car it is 4 to 5 hours, north east through Kurunegala and Dambulla, part of it on the expressway. Leaving Colombo in the morning rush can add an hour before you have cleared the suburbs.

How Long Does Kandy to Sigiriya Take?

Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the 90 km. The road out of Kandy through Matale is slow and winding, then it opens up after Dambulla. Most people stop at the Dambulla cave temple on the way, which adds a couple of hours and is worth it.

Can I Get Here From the Airport in One Day?

Yes, easily, if you land in daylight. The airport is north of Colombo so you avoid the city, and it is 3.5 to 4.5 hours from there. After a late-night landing, a bed near the airport and the drive up next morning works better.

Is Sigiriya Wild Cottages Walking Distance From the Rock?

No, and deliberately not. We are 12 minutes away by road at Indigas wewa, which is why the nights here are quiet. We can sort out transport to the rock for you, including an early start if you want the gate at opening time.

Do I Need a Car While I Am Staying?

No. Most guests manage without one: tuk-tuks handle the short runs, safari jeeps collect from the cottages, and for longer days we can arrange a driver who stays with you. There is free parking if you do drive.

What Is the Nearest Town?

Sigiriya village is the closest, a few minutes away. Dambulla, 25 minutes south, is the nearest proper town with banks, a pharmacy and a large market. Habarana, 20 minutes north, is the junction most bus routes pass through.
