For Four
Quadruple Family Cottage, the Largest of the Seven
A king bed and two single beds in 38 m², with the garden outside the door. There is one of these, so ask for it early.
from US$90 / night, breakfast included
Room for Four
A King for the Parents, Two Singles for the Children
The two singles are proper beds with space of their own, so children are not at the foot of yours. With 38 m² inside, there is floor left over for the suitcases, the wet climbing clothes and a child who wants to play on it.
The garden starts at the door, and that is where the children go first and stay longest, with squirrels moving through the trees above them and junglefowl crossing the paths below while breakfast is laid out under the trees.
Four is the limit, with no cots and no extra beds. For five or more, ask about adding a Triple Room Cottage or an Economy Quadruple Cottage.

Families First
Ask for This One First If There Are Four of You
- Two parents and two children, which is what the beds are laid out for
- Four adults happy to share one bathroom, in the most space we have
- A larger family, adding a Triple Room Cottage next door
Choose Another Cottage If
- There is a baby who needs a cot. We do not keep one, and a fifth bed is not possible either
- There are two of you. The Double Room Cottage is smaller and starts US$20 lower
- The Quadruple Family Cottage is taken. An Economy Quadruple Cottage also sleeps four, in two double beds
To weigh it against the other three kinds, see the cottages page.
Inside the Cottage
An Arched Window Onto the Garden
The largest of the four kinds, at 38 m². An arched window opens the bedroom onto the garden, two framed clay reliefs hang above the king bed, and a model oruwa, the Sri Lankan outrigger canoe, stands on a wooden chest by the wall. The bathroom has a wooden-framed mirror over the basin.
Breakfast for all four of you is served outside each morning, Sri Lankan food, cooked fresh.

What Children Do Here
The garden fills the gaps between the outings, and the outings below are the ones that work with children.
In the garden
Squirrels at Breakfast
A grizzled giant squirrel has learned when breakfast is served and comes down for it. Monkeys pass through some mornings, and junglefowl patrol the paths.
The wildlife here →In the village
A Village Cooking Lesson
A village kitchen, a wood fire and seven curries, with the children given the coconut to grind. Lunch is what you have cooked, eaten under the trees.
Days out with children →20 minutes
Elephants at Minneriya
One jeep takes all four of you, collected from the cottage in the afternoon, and the herds come down to the water as the light goes soft.

What Parents Ask
Questions About the Quadruple Family Cottage
How Are the Beds Arranged for a Family?
One king bed and two separate single beds, all in the one cottage. Children of any age are welcome, and anyone 13 or over counts as an adult when we quote the rate.
Do You Have a Cot for a Baby?
No, and no extra beds either. Four people is the most the cottage takes, so tell us if you are bringing a baby and we will say what is possible.
Is There More Than One Quadruple Family Cottage?
No, there is one. Two families on the same trip can add a Triple Room Cottage or an Economy Quadruple Cottage, and a family of five or six will need one of those as well.
Is Sigiriya Rock Too Hard for Children?
It is a steep climb with narrow stairways near the top, and not every young child enjoys it. Go at opening time when it is cool, take it slowly, and consider Pidurangala instead, which is shorter. The safari and the cooking lesson suit every age.
Is the Garden Safe for Children?
The cottages stand in forest, so children share the garden with squirrels, junglefowl and the occasional monkey. Keep food indoors, keep an eye on small children near the outdoor fireplace in the evening, and stay with them whenever they are in or near the swimming pool.
What Is the Direct Rate for the Quadruple Family Cottage?
From US$90 a night for the cottage, with breakfast for the whole family. A busy season costs more than a quiet one, and booking 3 months ahead earns the 15% discount, so send your dates and the ages and we will quote it exactly.
