Elephants gathering by the water at Minneriya National Park

The Wild

Minneriya Safari, 20 Minutes From the Cottages

We book the jeep, ask the drivers where the herds are that week, and send you with one who knows the park. You are collected at the door, so there is nothing for you to organise.

As the dry season draws the water down, the herds come out of the forest onto the tank bed to feed and drink, one of the largest gatherings of wild elephants anywhere, and it happens 20 minutes from where you are sleeping.

What It Costs

What a Minneriya Safari Costs, and How Long It Takes

Two separate costs, and it helps to know which is which before you compare quotes.

The two parts of a Minneriya safari cost, and how each is charged
CostChargedNotes
Park entrance Per person, at the gate Set by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Different rates for foreign visitors, SAARC nationals and Sri Lankan residents, with a vehicle charge, a service charge and VAT added on top
The jeep Per vehicle, not per person So four people sharing one jeep pay a quarter each. We pass it on at what it costs us

Park fees are set by the government and change without much warning, so a figure printed here would soon be out of date. Message us with your dates and how many you are, and we will send both numbers as they stand that week, before you commit to anything.

About 3 Hours in the Park

Allow about 3 hours inside the park, plus about 20 minutes each way from the cottages. Morning jeeps leave around 6am and afternoon jeeps around 2.30pm. With two nights here, one of each is worth doing: the morning is quieter and better for birds, the afternoon better for elephants.

Not Always Minneriya

Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu, Which One This Month

The herds move. As water levels change across the season they shift between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park, and the park that was extraordinary in August can be quiet in November. The name on the ticket matters less than where the elephants are that week.

We Ask the Drivers

The drivers who were out this week stood in front of the herds yesterday, so we ask them first. If the elephants are at Kaudulla, we say so and book Kaudulla, even if Minneriya is the name you searched for.

For the background on the parks themselves and the month-by-month pattern, read the Minneriya National Park guide.

20 Minutes

Getting There From the Cottages

The jeep collects you from your cottage and brings you back afterwards, so there is no car park to find at dawn. Tell us the evening before and we will set the pickup time around whatever else you have planned.

20 minutes to the Minneriya gate is the part that matters on a 6am start: you are inside the park while the light is still soft. If you would like a driver for the whole Cultural Triangle rather than just the safari, we can arrange a driver for that too.

Coming the night before an early start is the sensible move. Have a look at the cottages, all seven of which are air-conditioned and face the garden.

Wild Animals

What You Are Likely to See

Elephants are likely and never guaranteed. This is a national park, and the animals go where they please.

The Dry Season Gathering

Through the drier months the tank shrinks back and the grass that grows on the exposed bed pulls herds in from the surrounding forest. On a good afternoon you can watch dozens of animals at once, families with calves among them, moving down to the water as the heat drops.

Outside those months the elephants are still there, just spread out and in smaller groups. A quiet afternoon with 12 elephants and no other jeep in sight has its own appeal.

Birds Around the Tank

The tank edge is serious birding country, and the morning tour is the one to take for it. Painted storks, pelicans, egrets and eagles all work the shallows, and the surrounding scrub holds bee-eaters and rollers.

If birds are the reason you are coming rather than a bonus, there is more on birdwatching here, including what turns up in our own gardens before breakfast.

How We Arrange It for You

Send us your dates and how many of you there are. We check with the drivers, tell you which park and which time of day we would pick, and send the park fee and the jeep cost as two figures.

In the gathering season book a day or two ahead. Outside it, the evening before is usually enough.

Before You Book

Questions Before You Book

How Much Does a Minneriya Safari Cost?

There are two parts. The park entrance fee is paid per person at the gate and is priced differently for foreign visitors, SAARC nationals and Sri Lankan residents, with a vehicle charge, service charge and VAT added on top. The jeep is hired per vehicle rather than per person, so sharing brings the cost down a long way. We quote both parts separately, at the current rate, when you message us.

How Long Does a Minneriya Safari Take?

Set aside half a day: 3 hours in the park and 20 minutes each way. Jeeps leave at about 6am and about 2.30pm.

Is Minneriya Better Than Kaudulla?

It depends on the month. The herds follow the water between the three parks, so the right answer in August is often the wrong one in November. We ask the drivers before we book and send you to the park with the elephants in it, whichever name it carries.

Can I Do a Safari Without a Car?

Yes. Your driver picks you up at your cottage and drops you back after the drive. Tell us the day before and we will fix the pickup time around your plans.

What Is the Best Time of Day?

Mid-afternoon, generally. Elephants move towards the tank as the heat drops and the light is better for photographs. Morning safaris are quieter and better for birds. Guests who stay two nights often do both.

Do I Need to Book in Advance?

In the gathering months, yes: give us two days if you can. The rest of the year the evening before is normally enough. Send your dates on WhatsApp and we will confirm the jeep and the cost.

Will We Definitely See Elephants?

No. The elephants are wild and keep their own timetable. In the right park at the right time of day sightings are very likely, which is why we check with the drivers before we book.
